Santo Toribio Romo Relic Pilgrimage
The relic of Saint Toribio Romo, a great friend and intercessor for those crossing the border, will tour southern California before arriving at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles for an Immigration Mass, celebrated by Archbishop José Gomez, on July 20, 2014. The relic, bones of St. Toribio, are contained in a reliquary in a statue of the saint. The statue was lent to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by St. Toribio's home church in Jalisco, Mexico. Born in 1900, St. Toribio was a Catholic priest and martyr during the Cristero Wars, an uprising against Mexico's anti-Catholic government. He was killed in 1928 by federal troops for defending his religious faith. On May 21, 2000, St. Toribio Romo was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
